Data Monday: From PC to Tablet

by August 29, 2011

In June 2010, Steve Jobs announced the world was entering a post-PC era. One year and 2 months later... how right was he?

  • After twenty years of making personal computers, worldwide market leader Hewlett-Packard announced it was planning to offload its PC business. (source)
  • Computer makers are expected to ship only about 4% more PCs this year than last year. Tablet global sales are expected to more than double this year. (source)
  • Sales of Apple's iPad pulled in 30% more than all of Dell’s consumer PC business in just the first half of the year. (source)
  • It’s only been a year and a few months since Apple’s iPad launched, but as of last quarter, it has already passed (9.2 million iPads for $6 billion in revenue) Apple’s 27-year-old Mac business (3.9 million Macs for $5.1 billion) in revenue. (source)
  • By next year, tablet sales in the United States will outpace those of netbooks, which were once considered a salvation for the PC industry. (source)
  • Global media tablet shipments now are expected to rise to 60 million units in 2011, up 245% from 17.4 million in 2010. (source)
  • In the US tablet owners tended to be male and on the younger side. But this is no longer the case. Back in Q3 2010 62% of tablet owners were under the age of 34 and only 10% were over the age of 55. By Q2 2011, only 46% of tablet owners were under the age of 34 and the percentage of those over 55 had increased to 19%. (source)
